What we’re fighting for:
Healthcare for All
Widespread unemployment during the coronavirus pandemic makes clear what we already knew: healthcare must be a human right, not a privilege tied to employment. In the richest country on earth, no one should ever have to take out their wallet before they can see a doctor.
A Green New Deal
Listening to the scientists means more than lip service, it means taking action to achieve net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2030. At every level of government, we can fight to achieve a fair and just transition for all communities and workers, creating millions of union jobs to build sustainable infrastructure. Climate justice must be at the heart of the Green New Deal, ending and repairing the oppression of indigenous peoples, communities of color, and poor communities across America.
End the Forever War
An entire generation of Americans are old enough to be in college and cannot remember a time when the United States was not engaged in global military conflict. We must end the forever wars and reduce our military spending by at least 10%, using those savings to invest in impoverished communities.
Criminal Justice Reform
For every reform made to policing in America, very little changes. Our Black, trans, and homeless neighbors are continually murdered and assaulted at the hands of a system we entrust to keep us safe. Last year, the Movement for Black Lives demanded that we revisit our core assumptions about public safety. It’s time that we truly set our budget priorities in line with our moral priorities by moving funds from local police departments to social services proven to keep us safe, like housing, education, and jobs. We must end cash bail, mandatory minimum sentencing, and the construction of new jails and private prisons.
Housing for All
When the best way to prevent the spread of the coronavirus is to “stay at home,” it is obvious that having a roof over one’s head is part of one’s healthcare. It’s time to invest in truly affordable housing, strengthen the rights of tenants, and oppose unfair rezonings that contribute to gentrification and displacement.
Tax the Rich
Decades of austerity politics have hollowed out our common goods and produced unconscionable inequality, with cities and states facing down further budget slashes. In fact, today’s tax burden typically falls on the working class. To rebuild this country, we need to undo the Trump tax cuts and implement real progressive taxes on corporate profits and capital gains.
Education for All
It is undeniable that many careers require a college education, particularly as the country deindustrializes. In a humane economy, pursuing a college degree must not require the possibility of decades of economic servitude. Every penny of student loan debt must be canceled, and public colleges and trade schools must be made free to all.
